Aidas & Veronica, plus Zain for the first weekend · 30 Oct – 7 Nov 2026 · 8 nights · Version 2, final, checked 26 Oct

Sardegna road trip

The loop now runs anticlockwise, so the big east-coast hikes fall on the weekend Zain is here: the Baunei coast and Cala Goloritzé on Friday, the Gorropu gorge on Saturday. Then he drives home and you carry on. Every place name opens in Google Maps.

Where to stay: options & pricesCar rental & insurance

What changed from version 1

The loop runs the other way

Anticlockwise now: east coast first while Zain is with you, then west, south-west and south-east. Almost every stop from V1 is still in.

A big first weekend with Zain

Fri: straight up the coast to Pedra Longa, the Golgo plateau and a hike down to Cala Goloritzé, then over the Genna Silana pass. Sat: the Gorropu gorge, the biggest hike of the trip.

Zain gets home on his own

He has his own car and drives from the Gorropu trailhead to Cagliari on Saturday afternoon (≈ 3 h) for his Sunday 08:00 flight. You carry on.

Cala Gonone is the first base

3 nights from the first night (Fri, Sat, Sun). Then Cabras 1, Nebida 2 and Villasimius 2, as before.

Small swaps

The Sella del Diavolo moves to the sunset of Thu 5 Nov, Capo San Marco becomes a sunset walk, the Cala Domestica hike moves to Wed 4 Nov, and the Su Gologone dinner moves to Sat 31 Oct. New optional stop: the Rocce Rosse at Arbatax.

Day guides

One page per day, checked against what is actually open in early November: every drive turn by turn, exact parking spots with a “Navigate here” button, the hikes step by step with times, and phone numbers. Open the day’s guide on your phone in the morning.

What the final check changed (26 Oct)

  • Fri 30 Oct: Goloritzé booking is mandatory (the 2026 season runs to 15 Nov): €7, opens at 00:00 on Tue 27 Oct. The trail closes to new walkers at 13:00 and the beach at 16:00, so you drive straight to the Golgo plateau by noon. Rocce Rosse is optional, and Genna Silana is crossed after dark.
  • Sat 31 Oct: the Gorropu ticket desk opens at 10:00 (€6, cash). Zain leaves the pass at 14:00, about 3 h to Cagliari. 31 Oct is Su Gologone’s last weekend of the season: book now. Il Colibrì in Dorgali is the fallback.
  • Sun 1 Nov: the Bue Marino cave is reached by boat only (10:00, 11:00, 15:00; the land path is closed). The Cala Luna boats run until 1 Nov but need 10 passengers, so walk to Cala Luna in the morning, treat a boat back as a bonus, and take the 15:00 cave boat.
  • Mon 2 Nov: the Cabras museum (all the Mont’e Prama giants are there now) and Tharros are closed on Mondays. Sinis beach parking is still paid that day (the last day of the season).
  • Tue 3 Nov: approach Piscinas via Ingurtosu to avoid the river fords. Porto Flavia has no November timetable yet, so phone IAT Iglesias to confirm a tour. Laveria Lamarmora and its stairway are closed, so watch the sunset from the Nebida belvedere.
  • Wed 4 Nov: the hike is now trail 301, an 11.5 km loop via Buggerru. The Grotta Azzurra boats almost certainly aren’t running. Su Mannau is closed and Is Zuddas only opens at weekends, so the rain option is the Montevecchio mine.
  • Thu 5 Nov: the Porto Pino white dunes are closed outside summer. Drive the inland road to Villasimius after dark, not the SP17. The Cagliari archaeological museum is partly closed for works.
  • Sat 7 Nov: leave at 06:15. Only Avis, Budget and Maggiore open before 08:00 at CAG, so check your company’s key-box return now.
  • Roads: the SS125 north of Dorgali towards Orosei is closed until March 2027. It isn’t on the route, but phone the Grotta di Ispinigoli before a rainy-day visit.

13 nights

Cala Gonone Gulf of Orosei, east

Fri 30 Oct → Mon 2 Nov · check in 30.10 · check out 02.11

The hiking base for the Zain weekend: Gorropu, Cala Luna, Cala Fuili and the Bue Marino cave are all 10–40 min away. Zain is with you on the first night (Fri), so pick a place with a second bedroom or a sofa bed, or he books his own room.

Alternative: Dorgali (15 min, over the pass) is a real town with more open in November. For a splurge, look at agriturismi around Oliena / Su Gologone.

Day by day

Times are a guide. Plan around daylight: sunrise is about 06:50–06:57, sunset 17:16–17:25, and it's dark about half an hour later.

Day 1 FridayWith Zain

Fri 30 Oct Up the Baunei coast: Pedra Longa, Golgo and Cala Goloritzé

The most spectacular coast in Sardinia, on the day you land. Up the fast new SS125 to the limestone coast of Baunei, a booked hike down to Cala Goloritzé (the trail closes to new walkers at 13:00), then over the Genna Silana pass to Cala Gonone after dark. You'll have been up since about 03:30, so the easy version is below.

Day 1 in detail: routes, parking, step by step →

  1. 07:201

Land at Cagliari Elmas, pick up both cars

Hand luggage only, so you should be driving by 08:00. Zain takes his own car (he needs it to get back on Saturday). Stock up on picnic food and water at the Conad in Quartu on the way out (08:25, open daily).

  2. 10:152

    Optional: Rocce Rosse at Arbatax

Only if you’re past Muravera by about 09:45. Red porphyry towers right at the water's edge next to the port, a few minutes off the road. It adds 30–40 min and pushes the trailhead to about 12:40, so usually skip it.

  3. 11:053

    Pedra Longa

About 2 h 15 from Quartu, at the end of a steep lane below Baunei: a 128 m limestone needle rising out of the sea. Stay 15–20 minutes, then move on: the trailhead is the priority.

  4. 11:254

    Up to the Golgo plateau

Fill up at the Api-IP in Baunei (the last fuel before Dorgali), then 40 min up the hairpins to a wild limestone plateau with free-roaming pigs, goats and donkeys. Park at Su Porteddu, the Goloritzé trailhead, by about 12:05. After the hike, Su Sterru, a near-perfect 270 m deep shaft, is five minutes away for the sunset.

  5. 12:055

    Hike to Cala Goloritzé

Show your QR code at the kiosk. The path drops through a limestone canyon to the beach with the 143 m Aguglia spire and the natural arch. Picnic and swim at the bottom, leave the beach by 14:45, and you’re back up at about 16:45. Booking is mandatory until 15 Nov (€7, opens at 00:00 on Tue 27 Oct, 250 people at a time). The trail closes to new walkers at 13:00 and the beach at 16:00.

SS125 over the Genna Silana pass

Sunset at Su Sterru (17:21), then back down through Baunei and north on the old SS125 over the 1,017 m pass, one of the great mountain roads of Italy. You drive it in the dark: slowly, with animals on the road and no fuel. You cross the trailhead of tomorrow's hike at the top and see it all in daylight in the morning.

Check in for three nights. Most of Cala Gonone is shut for the winter, so phone ahead for dinner or cook.

Alternative / easier

Skip the Goloritzé hike: walk around the Golgo plateau (Su Sterru, the San Pietro church, the Piscinas rock pools) and cross Genna Silana in daylight to be in Cala Gonone by about 16:30 for a nap.

If it rains

Drive the inland route via the SS131 and Nuoro instead (2 h 30), with the Museo del Costume or the MAN in Nuoro, then the Grotta di Ispinigoli near Dorgali. Do Goloritzé on Sunday instead of Cala Luna (it needs a new booking).

Day 2 SaturdayWith Zain · his last day

Sat 31 Oct Gola di Gorropu, then Zain drives back

The big hike, with Zain. One of Europe's deepest canyons, with walls up to about 500 m and a river bed full of white boulders. The trailhead is on the SS125 heading south, so Zain packs his car in the morning and drives to Cagliari straight from the pass.

Day 2 in detail: routes, parking, step by step →

  1. 07:301

Both cars up the SS125 to Passo di Genna Silana

40 min of mountain road to the 1,017 m pass. Zain checks out and brings his bag. Park by the old cantoniera and Bar Silana. Bring lunch, 2 litres of water each and €6 cash each.

  2. 08:152

Hike down into the Flumineddu valley and the gorge

A well-trodden path drops about 600 m through holm oak and juniper, about 1 h 45 down. Buy the entry ticket (€6, cash only) at the kiosk at the gorge mouth, open daily 10:00–16:30. Walk into the narrows as far as the big red dot on a giant boulder. Beyond it is for guided groups with ropes.

  4. 14:00

    Zain: Genna Silana → Cagliari

About 3 h south on the SS125 via Baunei and Tortolì, then the new SS125, so he reaches the airport around 17:15, at sunset. Dinner in the Marina quarter, a night near the airport, then his 08:00 flight on Sunday.

    ≈ 170 km≈ 3 h
  5. 14:003

    You: back to Cala Gonone

40 min back down. Shop for Sunday (it’s a public holiday), then a sunset walk along the seafront to the little Palmasera beach (sunset ≈ 17:21).

  6. 20:004

    Dinner at Su Gologone

Classic Barbagia cooking: roast suckling pig, culurgiones, pane carasau and Cannonau wine. 40 min from Cala Gonone. It’s the last weekend of the season: book now by phone or WhatsApp (+39 0784 287512). Fallback: Il Colibrì in Dorgali.

Getting Zain home

Option A (recommended): Zain drives back on Saturday afternoon, straight from the trailhead, and sleeps near the airport. About 3 h, mostly in daylight, and an easy morning before the 08:00 flight. Option B: Zain stays for the Su Gologone dinner and leaves Cala Gonone at about 03:45 on Sunday (≈ 3 h 15 via Nuoro and the SS131), returning the car by about 07:00. Possible, but brutal after a 6-hour hike. Either way, check the car-rental return hours at CAG (or use the key box).

Alternative / easier

Cala Fuili → Cala Luna (today's and tomorrow's hikes swap places): less climbing, more sea, and Zain can still leave Cala Gonone by 14:30 (≈ 3 h 15 via Nuoro). Or Tiscali from the Valle di Lanaittu: a 2–3 h hike up to a collapsed sinkhole with a hidden village inside.

If it rains

After heavy rain the Gorropu riverbed is dangerous, so ask at the pass. Do the Grotta di Ispinigoli instead (a 38 m stalagmite; November tours at 11:00 and 12:00; phone +39 348 478 0104 first, as the SS125 north of Dorgali is closed) and a Cannonau tasting at Cantina Dorgali. Zain can head off after lunch.

Day 3 Sunday · holiday

Sun 1 Nov Cala Luna on foot, and the Bue Marino cave

A coastal walk that's a boat trip in summer. In November you'll have Cala Luna almost to yourselves. All Saints' Day is a public holiday, so shops are shut: buy picnic food on Saturday.

Day 3 in detail: routes, parking, step by step →

  1. 07:451

    Cala Fuili

  4. 15:003

Boat to the Grotta del Bue Marino

The sea cave where monk seals once lived, with an underground lake and stalactites. It’s reached only by boat: on 1 Nov they leave Cala Gonone port at 10:00, 11:00 and 15:00 (later in November on request only). Book the 15:00 boat + cave ticket (≈ €40) at grottabuemarino.it or on +39 338 834 1618. Calm sea only.

Alternative / easier

Walk only as far as the first big viewpoint (about 45 min) and come back for an afternoon by the sea in Cala Gonone. The boats from Cala Gonone port run until 1 Nov but need 10 passengers: if one sails (+39 0784 93305), ride the 12:30 boat back from Cala Luna instead of walking.

If it rains

Grotta di Ispinigoli (if not done yet; phone first) and a Cannonau tasting at Cantina Dorgali. Or drive to Orgosolo for its political murals (45 min).

Day 4 Monday

Mon 2 Nov Su Gologone spring, across the island, Capo San Marco at sunset

Morning in the mountains, afternoon on the west coast, and the sun sets into the sea at the end of the cape. Tharros is no longer a stop: you walk past it on the way out and see it from the path.

Day 4 in detail: routes, parking, step by step →

  1. 09:301

    Su Gologone spring

Sardinia's largest karst spring: a deep blue-green crack at the foot of the Supramonte cliffs, with divers yet to find its bottom. Short walk, small entry fee. November hours aren’t published, so phone first (+39 328 564 9983).

  3. 14:153

    Is Arutas and Mari Ermi

Beaches made of polished rice-grain quartz pebbles, white, pink and green. Taking any home is illegal (fines are big), so photos only. Mari Ermi, next door, is wilder. Parking is still paid today, the last day of the season: ParkingMyCar app or coins.

Walk out along the narrow cape, past the edge of Tharros (closed on Mondays) and the Spanish tower, to the high ground by the nuraghe near the tip, with sea on both sides. The lighthouse beyond is a fenced Navy site. Time it so you're on the cliffs for sunset, and bring a head torch for the walk back.

25 min back to town. Dinner at Zia Belledda (from 20:00) or Leopardi (from 19:45).

Alternative / easier

Skip Capo San Marco and watch the sunset from Is Arutas instead. Or drive the scenic way past the Sos Molinos waterfall (Monte Ferru) instead of the SS131.

If it rains

The Cabras museum (now home to all the Mont'e Prama giants) and Tharros are closed on Mondays. Do the 11:00 tour at Ispinigoli before you leave the east, then wander Oristano’s old centre.

Day 5 Tuesday

Tue 3 Nov Piscinas dunes, Buggerru and Porto Flavia

Down the Costa Verde to the mining coast. Desert dunes in the morning, a tunnel through a cliff in the afternoon, and the best sunset spot of the trip to finish.

Day 5 in detail: routes, parking, step by step →

  1. 10:151

    Dune di Piscinas

About 2 h south via Guspini, Arbus and the abandoned Ingurtosu mining valley; the last 5 km is washboard dirt road. Come in this way: the northern approach has river fords. Some of the tallest dunes in Europe, rolling back from a 7 km wild beach, with no military zone and nobody there in November. Climb the big ones for the view down the Costa Verde.

    Lunch in Buggerru

About 1 h 10: back up the dirt road and round by the SS126, as there’s no coast road south of Piscinas. Coffee and lunch by the tiny harbour; phone first, as November hours aren’t confirmed.

  3. 15:003

    Porto Flavia

A 1920s mining port tunnelled straight through the cliff, opening onto the sea directly facing Pan di Zucchero. Guided visits only (€13, ≈ 50 min, closed shoes). No November timetable has been published, so phone IAT Iglesias (+39 0781 274507) this week to confirm a tour on Tue 3 or Wed 4 Nov, then book at iglesiasturismo.it. If there’s none, swap it for Pan di Zucchero from Masua beach.

    Sunset at the Nebida belvedere

A railed walk above the sea, looking down on the ruined Laveria Lamarmora ore-washing plant and across to Pan di Zucchero. The laveria and the stairway down to it are closed for safety works, so watch from the south viewpoint. Probably the best sunset spot of the trip.

Skip Piscinas and take the SS131 / SS130 straight to Iglesias, then do Porto Flavia and a lazy afternoon at Masua.

If it rains

Porto Flavia is inside a tunnel, so keep it. Swap Piscinas for a Montevecchio mine tour (open on Tuesdays by booking, +39 338 459 2082). The Su Mannau caves are closed from November.

Day 6 Wednesday

Wed 4 Nov Hike day: the cliffs of Cala Domestica, and the Grotta Azzurra

The Saturday hike from version 1, now midweek. Everything is within 25 minutes of the bed.

Day 6 in detail: routes, parking, step by step →

    Sunset at Nebida or Masua

Back to the Nebida belvedere for a second round (sunset ≈ 17:22), or watch from Masua beach behind Pan di Zucchero. The path to the Spanish tower above Cala Domestica is overgrown.

Alternative / easier

The short CAI loop (≈ 7 km, +400 m) skips Buggerru: inland track to Pranu Sartu, then the cliffs back to La Caletta. Or the easy Cammino di Santa Barbara path from Nebida to Masua (≈ 6 km one way, about 2 h): walk out as far as you like and turn round.

If it rains

The caves are out: Su Mannau is closed from November and Is Zuddas only opens at weekends. Instead, a Montevecchio mine tour (by booking, +39 338 459 2082). Do the Porto Flavia tunnel tour today if you missed it yesterday. Coffee in Iglesias old town.

Day 7 Thursday

Thu 5 Nov Porto Pino, the Costa del Sud, Chia and the Sella del Diavolo

If it rains

The Is Zuddas caves only open at weekends from 2 Nov, so go to Cagliari: the Museo Archeologico Nazionale (open daily, but some floors are closed for works and the giants have moved to Cabras, so phone +39 070 655911) and the Castello quarter.

Day 8 Friday

Porto Giunco, the flamingo lagoon and the tower

The Stagno di Notteri behind the beach usually has flamingos. Walk 15–20 minutes up to the Torre di Porto Giunco for the classic view over both, and stay for the sunset.

Before we go

Good to know in early November

  • Weather: usually 18–22 °C and sunny spells, sea about 20 °C. The forecast on 26 Oct shows a dry week, with a fresh northerly on the east coast on 1–2 and 6–7 Nov; it’s long-range, so check again. Pick each day's coast by the wind.
  • Off-season: many beach bars and resort restaurants are shut. Towns (Iglesias, Cabras, Dorgali, Villasimius) still have places open. Carry water and picnic food on hike days.
  • Sun 1 Nov is a public holiday (Ognissanti): shops shut, buy food on Saturday. Mondays are museum closing days.
  • Festival: Autunno in Barbagia / Cortes Apertas is in Desulo 31 Oct–1 Nov, and Mamoiada 6–8 Nov (Ovodda 7–8 Nov).
  • Roads: the SS125 between Dorgali and Orosei is closed until March 2027. It isn’t on the route.
